Bürgergeld and Grundsicherungsgeld: understanding the Jobcenter's decision
- Built-in template
- Last reviewed: 2026-10
Bürgergeld (basic income support for jobseekers) is paid by the Jobcenter for a fixed period. The decision (Bewilligungsbescheid) lists the months, the amounts and how they were calculated. Check it carefully: mistakes in rent or income are common. Since 1 July 2026 the benefit is called Grundsicherungsgeld, with stricter rules on appointments and cooperation; letters may still say Bürgergeld for a while. Check the Jobcenter's current information.

Check the period and amounts
Find the approval period and check the standard rate, your housing costs and any income that was deducted.
Object if something is wrong
You can object (Widerspruch) within one month of receiving the decision. A short signed letter meets the deadline; reasons can follow.
Don't miss appointments
Invitations (Meldetermin) are binding. If you can't come, tell the Jobcenter before the date and give the reason; missing appointments can reduce payments.
Apply to continue in time
Before the approval period ends, submit the continued-payment application (Weiterbewilligungsantrag) so payments don't stop.
Report changes
Tell the Jobcenter about new income, a move or a change in your household straight away.
Documents you'll need
- The Bescheid with its reference number (Nummer der Bedarfsgemeinschaft)
