Rundfunkbeitrag: the broadcasting fee
- Built-in template
- Last reviewed: 2026-10
In Germany, every household pays one broadcasting fee (Rundfunkbeitrag), whether or not you own a TV or radio. One person per home registers and pays; flatmates share it. The Beitragsservice collects it and writes to new residents after they register their address.

Check if someone already pays
In a shared flat, only one person pays. Ask your flatmates for their contribution number (Beitragsnummer).
Register or link to the payer
Register online at rundfunkbeitrag.de, or tell the Beitragsservice who already pays for your home.
Check exemptions
People receiving certain benefits (for example Bürgergeld, BAföG or social assistance) can apply for exemption; some people with disabilities pay a reduced fee.
Pay or set up direct debit
The fee is usually paid quarterly. Check the current amount on the official site.
Update after a move
Change your address online when you move, and deregister when you leave Germany or move into a home where someone already pays.
Documents you'll need
- Your address and move-in date
- Contribution number of the person who pays, in a shared flat
- Benefit decision (Bescheid), if you apply for exemption
Deadlines (Fristen)
- Reply to Beitragsservice letters by the date they give.
- Exemptions are usually granted from the start of the benefit period if you apply in time; apply soon after you get the benefit decision.
Questions and answers
I don't own a TV. Do I still pay?
Yes. The fee is per home, not per device.
I got a Festsetzungsbescheid. What is it?
A formal decision setting unpaid fees, often with a late fee. You can object within one month; paying the open amount stops further costs. Check the letter's details.
