Extending your residence permit in Germany

Most residence permits (Aufenthaltstitel) are issued for a limited time. Apply for the extension at your Ausländerbehörde before your permit expires, and keep proof that you applied. The documents depend on the purpose of your stay: work, study, family or another reason.

Find your expiry date
It is printed on your electronic residence permit card (eAT). Start at least three months before.
Check what your permit is for
The purpose (work, study, family, job seeking) decides which documents you need. Your permit card names the legal basis.
Apply and book
Use your Ausländerbehörde's online form or appointment system. Save the confirmation email or letter.
Prepare the documents
Collect the documents for your purpose; the list below is the common core.

Give fingerprints and pay the fee at the appointment; collect the new card when it is ready.

- Current residence permit card
- Biometric passport photo
- Meldebescheinigung
- Proof of health insurance
- Proof of income or funds (payslips, employer confirmation, blocked account or scholarship)
- Purpose-specific proof, e.g. enrolment certificate or marriage certificate

- Reply to Ausländerbehörde letters by the date they give; ask for more time in writing if you need it.

What is a Fiktionsbescheinigung?
A paper certificate that says your application is being processed. If you applied before your permit expired, it usually keeps your current status until the decision.
Can I travel while my extension is pending?
It depends on your documents. Ask the Ausländerbehörde before you book travel.
