Kfz-Ummeldung: your car after a move
- Built-in template
- Last reviewed: 2026-10
When you move, the address in your vehicle registration must be updated without delay at the registration office (Zulassungsstelle) for your new address. In many places you can do it online (i-Kfz). Within Germany you can usually keep your number plates.

Do I need new number plates?
Usually not: since 2015 you can keep your plates when you move within Germany. You can choose new local plates if you like.

No, importing and registering a foreign car is a different process. See the vehicle registration template.
