Steps

  1. Register on Passport Seva (पासपोर्ट सेवा पर पंजीकरण करें)

    1 day

Create a user account on the official Passport Seva portal (passportindia.gov.in) or the mPassport Seva app. You select the Regional Passport Office for your current address, which also decides which Passport Seva Kendras (PSK) and Post Office PSKs (POPSK) you can book.

Decide what you are applying for: a fresh passport, or a reissue if you already have one (expiry, pages full, change of details, damage or loss). Choose normal or Tatkal processing, and 36 or 60 pages. Use the Document Advisor on the portal to get the exact list for your case.

Tip: Use only passportindia.gov.in or the official app. Look-alike websites charge extra service fees and are not connected to the Ministry of External Affairs.

  2. Gather proof documents (दस्तावेज़ इकट्ठा करें)

    3 days

You need proof of present address and proof of date of birth, plus extra papers if your case needs them.

Address proof can be Aadhaar, a recent electricity, water, telephone or gas bill, a bank passbook with photo for a running account, a registered rent agreement, or your spouse's passport, among others listed on the portal.

Date of birth: since the February 2025 rule change, people born on or after 1 October 2023 must give a birth certificate issued under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act. People born earlier can also use a school leaving or matriculation certificate, PAN card, driving licence, voter ID, service or pension record, or life insurance policy bond. Aadhaar is not accepted as proof of date of birth.

Adults who passed Class 10 should carry the marksheet to get a non-ECR passport. For a reissue, bring your old passport.

Tip: Make sure your name, date of birth and parents' names match across documents. A mismatch puts the file on hold.

  3. Fill in the application online (ऑनलाइन आवेदन भरें)

    1 day

Log in and choose Apply for Fresh Passport or Re-issue of Passport. Fill in personal details, family details, present and permanent address, emergency contact and previous passport details, if any. Answer the declarations carefully.

Submit the form to generate an Application Reference Number (ARN). You can save a draft and return to it.

For minors, both parents' details are needed; if a parent cannot consent, the portal lists the annexure to use. Annexures must be on plain paper in the prescribed format and are signed by the applicant or parent.

Tip: Enter your name exactly as you want it printed, with given name and surname split the same way as on your other documents. Spelling changes later need a reissue.

  4. Pay the fee and book an appointment (शुल्क भरें और अपॉइंटमेंट बुक करें)

    1 day

Under View Saved/Submitted Applications, choose Pay and Schedule Appointment. Online payment by card, net banking or UPI is required before an appointment slot is confirmed.

Fees were revised from 1 July 2026. For an adult, a 36-page passport costs Rs 2,500 under normal processing and Rs 5,000 under Tatkal; a 60-page passport costs Rs 3,500 normal and Rs 6,000 Tatkal. Minors and some other categories pay less. Always confirm your exact amount with the Fee Calculator on the portal before paying.

After booking, print or save the appointment receipt with the ARN and time slot.

Tip: New slots are released at set times each day. If none are free at your nearest PSK, check nearby POPSKs, which often have earlier dates.

  5. Prepare for the PSK visit (पीएसके जाने की तैयारी)

    1 day

Prepare a folder the evening before. The PSK checks originals against your application and keeps self-attested photocopies.

You do not need to bring photographs; your photo, fingerprints and signature are captured at the counter. Dress in clothes that contrast with a white background and avoid heavy accessories or tinted glasses. Arrive close to your slot time; the queue system will not let you in very early, and late arrivals may be turned away.

Tip: Bring one original and one self-attested copy of every document. Missing a single copy is the most common reason people are sent back.

    • Appointment receipt or SMS showing ARN and slot
    • Original address proof and self-attested copy
    • Original date of birth proof and self-attested copy
    • Class 10 marksheet for non-ECR status, if applicable
    • Old passport for reissue, with copies of first and last pages
    • Signed annexures, if your case needs any

  6. Attend the PSK or POPSK appointment (पीएसके अपॉइंटमेंट में जाएँ)

    1 day

At the PSK you get a token and move through three counters. At Counter A staff check your documents, take your photograph and fingerprints, and scan papers. At Counter B an official verifies the documents. At Counter C a Passport Granting Officer reviews the file and grants it or asks for more papers.

The visit usually takes one to three hours. Before leaving, collect the acknowledgement slip with your file number; it tells you whether police verification is pre-issue or post-issue.

If your file is put on hold, the slip lists what is missing and how to submit it.

Tip: Check the details printed on screen at Counter A carefully. Errors are easy to fix there and hard to fix after the passport is printed.

  7. Complete police verification (पुलिस सत्यापन पूरा करें)

    14 days

For most fresh passports, the local police station verifies your address and antecedents. An officer may visit your home or ask you to come to the station with originals of the documents you submitted. Many states use the mPassport Police app, so the report is sent online.

Time taken depends on your state and police station, from a few days to a few weeks. Track the status on the portal or app with your file number. For Tatkal or reissue cases, verification may happen after the passport is issued.

Tip: Keep your phone on and stay reachable at the declared address. If the officer cannot find you, the report goes back as not found and your passport is delayed.

  8. Track dispatch and receive the passport (पासपोर्ट डिस्पैच और प्राप्ति)

    7 days

Once the police report is clear, the Regional Passport Office prints the passport and sends it by Speed Post to your address. The portal and SMS show the Speed Post tracking number; you can track it on the India Post website.

The passport is delivered to the applicant in person, so someone must be home to receive it. Check the name, date and place of birth, and other details as soon as it arrives; report any error to the Passport Office immediately.

An adult passport is valid for 10 years. Sign it on the signature page and keep scanned copies of the data pages.

Tip: Plan international bookings only after the passport is in hand. Many countries need at least six months of validity left on arrival.
